Transition Risks, Assumptions, and Pitfalls (TRAPs)
|
|
Knowing it all
- overconfidence: believing you know best before you actually do
- using old solutions for new problems
- failing to ask questions - and listen carefully to learn what's really going on
Doing it all
- trying to do too much too soon
- failing to manage expectations appropriately
- becoming insulated and isolated; working behind closed doors
- if an internal promotion, beware of your former job's responsibilities
Assuming it all
- failing to check for understanding and buy-in (obtain compliance v. commitment)
- not rigorously evaluating your people by assuming they are competent, correctly placed, and motivated by the right things
- believing people will support and respect you because you're the boss and have good ideas
- believing you always will feel optimistic and challenged in your new position
- assuming your strengths in your former job will translate directly to the new one
